Mix the aesthetics of Alvar Aalto, Isamu Noguchi, and Henry Moore with a touch of Taoism and Isaac Newton, and the result could be Byung Hoon Choi. A sculptor, he is also considered a pioneer of contemporary South Korean art furniture, and his pieces are in the permanent collections of the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His debut U.S. solo exhibition, “In One Stroke,” opens at New York’s Friedman Benda gallery on February 27. While he has previously worked with wood and granite and recently experimented with carbon fiber, the 11 monumental benches in the show are his first in basalt. Some of it has been polished, and some has been left raw—the combination a tribute to ancient megalithic tombs and the mountainous provinces where he grew up.

This laid-back enclave in the town of San Pedro Mixtepec is no secret on the international surfing circuit. With 20-foot waves rivaling those in Hawaii and Australia, the coast near Puerto Escondido is known as the Mexican Pipeline. Hence the pop of surfer style that mixes with crisp modernism and the rustic vernacular at Hotel Escondido.

That’s the work not of an internationally recognized name—other Grupo Habita properties have involved TEN Arquitectos and India Mahdavi, to cite two—but of a small firm, Federico Rivera Río Arquitectura.

Mobikey, a new French manufacturer, was the brainchild of CEO and designer Stéphane Eynard, a former advertising executive who had nurtured for several years an idea for easy-to-assemble, modular storage units that could be personalized. Last year he plunged, left his advertising job and, working with new Mobikey business partner Nicolas Roussel and an artisan carpenter, developed the prototype for the initial product line: eGalHub is now available in an assortment of sizes, shapes and colors. (The name combines egal, French for equal, and hub as in wheel or airport.) The enthusiastic Eynard calls it “a reinvention of the drawer.”

Sparkling White Apartment with Hideaway Home Offices

This crisp home décor, from interior design studio Polinova Paul, harbors not one, but two secretive workspaces that would keep you hidden away from the hubbub of the household when duty calls. On top of the duty dens, this home holds some beautiful bedrooms, a fresh open plan living area, two practical small bathroom layouts and a dramatic hallway design. Let’s explore!

We start off in the serene living space, where the lounge area floats in the center of the open space like an island–clinging to an area rug, nestled under the bough of an arc lamp.

A home wine bar has been created over in the window area with a simple bench, bar stools and a generous wine rack peeping through frosted glass doors.

The fireplace has been moved up and over to make way for a flatscreen TV, and the two hang happily side-by-side.

The dining area butts up against the back of the sofa to provide extra floor space in the kitchen.

This kids room benefits from oodles of storage space, keeping all of the clutter at bay.

Vertical track lighting glamorously frames the master bed.

The master bedroom’s walk-in closet leads through to a very private study. Although the home office is hidden away out of plain sight, the décor detail is fabulous. Geometric print wallpaper gives a blast of style and interest to the small room, whilst an oversized art print in sunshine yellow lifts the whole look.

A large window floods the side office in natural light, illuminating a built in bookcase.

Small but perfectly formed, this tiny shower room is kitted out with a mini basin and wall mounted toilet.

This colorful kids room is filled with warm and cozy lighting, casting a fuzzy glow against wood paneling.

The second home workspace nestles in a tight spot, but what it lacks in dimensions it makes up for in cheerful color and striking form.

Bespoke shelving ensures that every nook is utilized.

Lighting strips decorate the hallway.
